Soon you may not just be pinning your favourite quotes, what you had for dinner last night or workout photos as it has been revealed that Pinterest are working on adding GIFs to their site.
A new feature will be available to select pinners, allowing them to play GIFs within the platform; something which isn’t currently available. At the moment GIFs are displayed as still images on Pinterest and if you want to view the GIF you must follow the link back to the original source; so navigating away from Pinterest and back to the original platform where the GIF was originally posted.
How will this work?
GIFs will, after being uploaded to a pinboard, display a play/pause button in the bottom left-hand corner of the image..
Mashable says
“However, the GIF feature is not available to all Pinterest users. For example, Wantering is able to view and play GIFs from its own and other pinboards, but most users still see the GIFs as still images.”
Usually when social networks come up with new features they make the new features available to a handful of users, hopefully this is the case here and Pinterest aren’t just going to allow only a select few of their users to utilise this new feature.
Unfortunately, it isn’t yet known how many users will get to test this new feature and if this feature will become available for all users of Pinterest in the future.
I think this would be a great feature for everybody on Pinterest, also it would be unique because, unlike Twitter and Facebook, Pinterest would be allowing users to upload GIFs to their site; however this isn’t yet a feature on Twitter or Facebook. If you want to upload a GIF to either Twitter or Facebook you must share the GIF using Giphy – but only Giphy URLs can be used. Therefore, I think people would use Pinterest most to upload their GIFs because it would allow users to upload GIFs directly instead of having to use other sites to share the URL onto their other social networks.
